The Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis course provides advanced training for automotive technicians who want to further develop their diagnostic and technical skills.

This automotive diagnostics course enables participants to enter employment in a senior, supervisory, or managerial role within the automotive and repair industry.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be provided with this information.

What will I study?

To successfully complete this course, you will need to undertake a total of 10 units of competence. If you are employed, these can be negotiated with your employer and could include: Carry out diagnosis of complex system faults, Manage environmental compliance in an automotive workplace, Diagnose and repair electronic spark ignition engine management systems, Depower battery electric vehicles, Diagnose complex faults in heavy commercial vehicle braking systems or Diagnose complex faults in motorcycle steering and suspension systems.

Can I apply?

It is recommended that you have a minimum of Certificate III in an automotive course OR substantial experience within the industry. It is also recommended that you have satisfactory numeracy and literacy skills to undertake this course or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course. You may apply if you have satisfactorily completed VCE or an approved equivalent course and the satisfactory completion of the work requirements (eligibility to transfer); or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course. (Mature age is anyone over the age of 18 who has been out of full-time education for more than 12 months.)

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may lead to employment in a senior, supervisory or management role in the automotive and repair industry.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain skills in a variety of competencies which include a combination of workplace training and training at the Automotive Centre of Excellence (ACE).

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.
