Introduction
The Journalism-Photography/Mass Communications program is a hands-on, laboratory experience that builds relevant skills and a portfolio. The skills courses taught in this program are honed directly in the student newspaper, The Ranger, where student work is published in print and online. organize information into news articles, photographs, slideshows, and videos. Photography courses teach skills for professional photography, social media, and hobbies, as well as provide a basis for filmmaking and videography training.
The Journalism Field of Study combines a theoretical understanding of the role of journalism in a free society and extensive hands-on training to prepare students for success in rapidly changing fields in mass media. Coursework and student media allow students to gain experience and build portfolios. The Field of Study in journalism provides the foundation for further study for careers in newspaper, radio, television, magazines, digital media, photojournalism, documentary filmmaking, public relations, advertising, and photography. Journalism skills also prepare students for success in many additional fields, such as law, business, entertainment, and public policy. Students should select Option 1 for digital, electronic, and print journalism and photojournalism, Option 2 for public relations and advertising, and Option 3 for photography.
