The Center for Middle East and North Africa Studies (CMENAS) at Binghamton University coordinates the study of the Middle East, North and Sudanic Africa, and European countries that have extensive Islamic contact. The Center develops and integrates research and graduate and undergraduate instruction about the MENA area.

The focus of African-American Studies (AFRAM) is to assist students on a path of consciousness that ultimately leads to improving their lives and family and liberating our communities. The primary goals and objectives of the program are consistent with and enhance the overall Merritt College mission and have consistently sought to help community college students develop factual information, tools of analysis, and favorable attitudes toward the African-American struggle and the liberation of African people from powerlessness, poverty, and racism.

The African American Studies program prepares students with the comprehensive knowledge base, critical skills and social consciousness necessary to function as effective leaders in an increasingly globalized and diverse society. Our program is grounded in the decolonization and liberation projects of African Americans and their allies in the civil rights, gender, and sexual liberation movements of the 1960s that continue through the present in new forms that address new conditions. The aim of African American Studies is to support students in developing a critical consciousness and an understanding of social, political, cultural, and economic forces that have shaped the histories and current day realities of African Americans. Our studies are grounded in the principles of social justice and self-determination of oppressed communities. This program centralizes the knowledges, epistemologies and critical thinking produced by racially and sexually oppressed subjects, and we endeavor to examine the entangled intersectionality of racialized sexuality, gender, and class in complex socio- historical processes.

The discipline of African American Studies at the College Of Alameda will give you a deep appreciation and understanding of the impact that people of African descent have had on the ancient and modern worlds. You will draw from multiple academic disciplines, including history, sociology, communication, literature, art, dance, anthropology, and political science. As an Africana studies major, you’ll have the chance to explore the centrality of Africa and the African Diaspora to the modern world and previous eras in the fields of literature, history, philosophy, international relations, cultural studies, music, and the visual arts. African American and Africana Studies (AAAS) minor is an interdisciplinary program that offers an introduction to the study of African intellectual heritage locally and globally. The AAAS minor and emphasis focus on the global links across the African diaspora and examines the contributions of the African intellectual heritage as key components of American culture. Classes engage the entire African diaspora, including the study of Africa, African, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Asian, African American, and mixed-race cultures. Because it is an interdisciplinary program, students pursuing African American and Africana Studies take courses in religion, English literature, English rhetoric, history, sociology, anthropology, political science, women and gender studies, modern languages, education and more. With its emphasis on interdisciplinary study, AAAS minor encourages students to conduct research across disciplinary and departmental boundaries. AAAS provides academic and career advising, research training, leadership skills development, peer mentoring and local/global community learning opportunities and engagement, including study abroad for students. Students who take advantage of these opportunities gain the skills and abilities to be effective leaders and responsible citizens in an increasingly culturally and ethnically diverse society.

As a field of inquiry, Africana studies describes and analyzes the origins and experiences of people of African descent wherever they live or have lived. The intellectual traditions inform this field of African American, African, and African Diasporic studies.
