Students will study about themselves and others as members of a larger society. Topics and discussion to stimulate critical thinking about ways people have acted in response to their societies will allow students to evaluate how societies and social subgroups operate.

Social and Behavioral Science is a group of courses emphasizing the study of perspectives, concepts, theories, and methodologies typically found in the vast variety of disciplines that comprise study in the Social and Behavioral Sciences.

The Associate in Arts (AA) in Liberal Studies degree is offered for the student intending to transfer to San Jose State University and obtain a Bachelors Degree leading toward the career of teaching. The program provides an excellent foundation in general education including the arts, sciences, humanities, and critical thinking. Students completing the degree will have completed the lower general education and will be able to have that series of courses certified at the time of transfer to San Jose State University. The major courses also further enhance the liberal studies emphasis for depth and breadth of study. Students interested in transferring to other California State Universities offering teacher preparation programs should also review the major sheet for an Associate in Arts in Elementary Teacher Education for Transfer (AA-T).

Art and Humanities courses emphasize the study of cultural, literary, humanistic activities and artistic expression of human beings. Students will evaluate and interpret the ways in which people through the ages in different cultures have responded to themselves and the world around them in artistic and cultural creation. Students will also learn to value aesthetic understanding and incorporate these concepts when constructing value judgments.

The liberal arts degree is designed for students who plan to transfer to a four-year institution to complete a baccalaureate degree program, usually the bachelor of arts degree, in the liberal arts or social sciences. Students in the program may wish to major in the following fields: American studies, anthropology, art, communication, economics, English, geography, government, history, humanities, journalism, library sciences, literature, music, philosophy, pre-law, psychology, religion, sociology or theatre arts.

The Associate of Arts in Liberal Studies degree is recommended for students whose educational goals require flexibility. The 2-year degree prepares students for transfer to a 4-year post-secondary institution and will also provide students with an opportunity to design a customized program to accomplish personal education goals.

Whether working with an indigenous community in Chile, getting their feet wet and hands dirty researching aquatic biology, or mentoring local grade-school children, in this degree, students have the chance to explore different fields of inquiry.

In keeping with its mission as a gateway bridging diverse international perspectives, HTIC offers the Discover East Asia: Language and Culture Immersion Program, which provides students the opportunity to pursue the study of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean language and culture as they complete their A.A. degrees. A special highlight of the program is the opportunity to study abroad – in China at Shenzhen University, in Japan at Tokai University, or in South Korea at Hanyang University – in intensive language classes.
