This two-year competency-based program leads to an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Welding Technology and provides training for skills and related technical knowledge necessary for advancement in the metals industry. Instruction includes classroom study as well as extensive practice in the welding lab. Peninsula College provides American Welding Society (AWS) certification testing for students in an approved facility on the campus.

Welding Technology is a participating organization of the American Welding Society’s SENSE (Schools Excelling through National Skill Standards Education) Program. This program is designed to provide training in a sequential manner for various welding processes, starting with simple tasks and progressing through more complex assignments. Those processes include shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, flux cored arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, oxy-acetylene cutting, brazing and welding, and the use of plasma arc cutting equipment. Students receive practical and theoretical training in the weldability of metals and alloys, blueprint reading, mathematics, and metallurgy.

There is an ever-increasing need for persons today that possess skills, both in welding and metallurgy. Materials of industry and new technology require highly skilled persons that understand material sciences, metallurgy, and the joining processes used to produce optimum quality fabrications. The quality-conscience industry of today demands certified people that can perform tasks from the simplest, to more complex technical applications. The courses selected in this program will give the student the required skills needed to perform, both hands-on and analytical tasks required by modern industrial technology.

The Industrial Systems Technology curriculum is designed to prepare or upgrade individuals to service, maintain, repair safely, or install equipment. Instruction includes theory and skill training needed for inspecting, testing, troubleshooting, and diagnosing industrial systems.

From agriculture to construction and manufacturing to aerospace, welding is involved. Southwestern Community College (SWCC) welding technology program is designed to give you a sound foundation in both gas and electric welding principles, practices, and usages.

The AAS in Applied Technical Management allows a student to complete a Welding diploma and continue to earn an AAS degree. In addition to the skills and knowledge obtained in the diploma program, the student will obtain degree-level general education knowledge and business-related skills and knowledge.

The Welding program at Manhattan Tech is designed to prepare students for immediate employment in the job market upon completion. Besides providing the specific technical skills necessary for employment, the program also includes general education knowledge.

Many students need preliminary math and writing courses before enrolling in the program requirements. These courses may increase the total number of program credits. Students should review their math and writing placement before planning out their full program schedules.

This program provides education and training in advanced welding and cutting processes, robotics, computer numerical control operations, inspection, print reading, fabrication, pipe and plate welding, math, communications, and other aspects of general education. Career opportunities as a Welding technician offer a wide range of employment possibilities in manufacturing, steel construction, mining, energy, and welding inspection. A diploma or Associate in Applied Science degree will provide higher-level employment opportunities in the welding industry. The NDSCS Welding program is an American Welding Society SENSE certified facility. AWS Level I and Level II certification is available.
