In this area of emphasis, history, culture, and contemporary issues are explored and analyzed through the intersecting perspectives of ethnicity, race, class, and gender. The curriculum combines an interdisciplinary knowledge of our socio-cultural world. Courses are open to all students in the College.

This pathway meets requirements for the Associate of Arts (AA) degree with an emphasis in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies. This sample schedule assumes a fall start. If you wish to take alternate courses not listed below please meet with a North advisor to confirm you're still meeting AA degree requirements.

The Associate in Arts (AA), Emphasis in Women and Gender Studies degree is an intensive interdisciplinary liberal arts program, which provides students with tools and opportunities to discuss and critique historical and contemporary theories and practices of feminism(s) and gender identities. The curriculum enables students to think critically, analyze problems, and communicate effectively.

You can earn an Associate of Arts (A.A.) with an Emphasis in Gender and Women's Studies (GWS) and transfer your credits to a four-year college or university to pursue GWS as your major. Gender and Women's Studies provides a strong interdisciplinary foundation for other majors as well.

The Departments of Social Sciences, Human Services and Criminal Justice and Speech, Communications, and Theatre Arts offer an interdisciplinary major in Gender and Women’s Studies leading to an Associate in Arts degree. This major focuses on gender as the object of analysis and addresses the many issues, inequalities, social constructions, and realities that gender presents in our contemporary society and throughout history.

The Gender and Women’s Studies Department at Monterey Peninsula College is committed to studying diverse identities of gender. Our students take courses that investigate common assumptions about gender and the political, cultural, institutional, and economic impacts of gender in the lives of women, men, and gender-queer people.

The Gender Studies program focuses on the experiences and questions of gender from various perspectives, including theory, history, religion, literature, cross-cultural studies, psychology, sociology, sexuality, and society and family.
