Computer science is the study of computers and computational systems, including artificial intelligence, networks and security, database systems, human-computer interaction, vision and graphics, numerical analysis, operating systems, programming languages, software engineering, and bioinformatics. Computer scientists work to solve problems and study the performance of computer hardware and software to solve problems, expand functionality, and improve efficiency of our technology-enhanced world.

Computer Science focuses on managing and operating complex computer systems. Computer science skills are needed in all areas of the economy: retailing, banking, manufacturing, agriculture, service, education, and government, as well as computer manufacturing and software development. This program provides students with the first two years of a four-year computer science degree and prepares them to enter a Bachelor of Computer Science program at the junior level. TCC offers courses that cover the first 2 years of a typical 4-year college computer science program (college-level courses) as well as courses to develop skills needed for college-level computer science courses. TCC offers three Pathways of degree choices for computer science students.

Industry is seeing a growing demand for a workforce that combines some of the traditional skill sets of building technicians with advanced skills in controls programming, networking, and systems integration. “Control Technicians” or “Building Automation Technicians” present an emerging and rapidly expanding market of high-wage employment for community college graduates. Their skill sets will also be needed for increasing green workforce demands to implement energy management, efficiency and sustainability measures in buildings.

AA in Computer Studies Transfer with Game Development Concentration is a program for students who want to transfer to a four-year college or university and work toward a bachelor’s degree in game development.

The Associate of Arts in Cybersecurity degree is designed for students interested in a career in the area of protecting computer systems and networks. It is designed to fulfill the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) requirements while providing flexibility in preparing students for transfer to a four-year institution. Students will learn about the vulnerabilities of hardware and software systems, perform network security testing, including countermeasure testing and the risk factor analysis needed to design a flexible and comprehensive security plan. Students will gain skills in providing for business continuity and disaster recovery. They can sit for the following industry certifications: CompTIA Linux+ and Security+; CCENT; CCNA Cyber Ops (SECOPS); and Microsoft Technology Associate. Since transfer requirements vary widely, it is important to consult with an advisor if you plan to transfer to a college or university.
