The Aboriginal Construction Program provides an opportunity to gain skills and knowledge that give a head start in the construction industry with the benefit of learning coastal First Nations construction history and methods. Developed in consultation with the coastal First Nation's communities this program is designed for aboriginal learners with components that include recognition of cultural issues regarding education and traditional construction as well as skills development in areas such as mathematics and communications.

The Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCA) Planning Advanced Certificate addresses the need for a comprehensive and holistic program relating to the protection and conservation of the lands and waters across Canada, and contributes to the development of a network of IPCA certified professionals who will play a critical role in Canada’s achievement of the “30% by 2030” goal.

This program is designed to provide participants with specific skills for successful employment as a Building Inspector. Participants will gain theoretical and hands on knowledge required for inspection work with Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation (CMHC), Indian & Northern Affairs Canada (INAC), and First Nations organizations to inspect new house construction and renovations on BC reserves.

Aboriginal students seeking to bridge the gap between post-secondary education and their educational aspirations can begin their journey at VIU. The Aboriginal University Bridging Certificate is a customizable program for Indigenous students who want to upgrade their courses and acquire the necessary prerequisites to begin their desired post-secondary education programs. Select the Adult Basic Education courses you need to meet pre-requisite requirements, and consider the option of taking additional entry-level university courses.

The Professional Indigenous Lands Management Certificate will appeal to individuals who are interested in Indigenous lands management, land use planning, community planning, or other topic areas relating to Indigenous communities, issues of sustainability, resource management, and a changing regulatory landscape.
