The Fire Sciences Department (FIRE) provides training and education for students wishing to begin a career in the fire service, attain a higher level of education, and/or prepare for career advancement.

Firefighters provide a special service to the community, protecting people and their property with fire prevention and protection efforts. To prepare for this career field, you’ll learn the principles of fire behavior, management, prevention, and protection systems, as well as other emergency services. Your training will include knowledge of building construction and the use of water in fire protection.

Firefighting is a dynamic public safety profession that requires a wide and ever-changing range of knowledge and skills. Areas of necessary knowledge include safety, fire behavior, and suppression, rescue, emergency medical service delivery and operations, hazardous materials, building construction, detection, and signaling systems, and the incident command system. This program focuses on preparing the student for their first career in the fire service. This program includes educational opportunities for those employed within the fire service, as well as those within volunteer fire agencies.

Do you know what to do if a fire breaks out? This health and safety course teaches you everything you need to know about fire safety. We explain how to prevent fires and how to respond to fire emergencies. We discuss how to develop fire safety systems and evacuation plans for homes and offices and assess their effectiveness. We then go through fire safety laws that protect vulnerable groups like the elderly, people with disabilities and children.

Participants must be members of a paid or volunteer fire department. Technical skill training and certifications are offered through fire departments. Once the required training and certifications are acquired, fire service technology credits can be transcripted. This program prepares you for entry-level employment in Wildland Fire Management. It provides entry-level fire suppression and management skills.

Recognizing the need for more highly skilled firefighters, many municipalities now require additional education for their employees. The curriculum developed for the associate in applied science degree program combines lectures with hands-on activities to prepare the student to respond to a variety of emergencies. Specialists in the field provide valuable input on both content and methodology.

In this online program, you will gain basic knowledge about firefighting and fire protection, including the history and philosophy of firefighting; fire stations and firefighting equipment; public service agencies and fire protection organizations; building construction and design concepts; fire prevention practices; among others.

The Higher National Diploma (HND) in Public Services is a two year, Full Time, work-related course. This course is designed, so that Year One is focused on the HNC syllabus at Level 4 while Year Two is focused on the HND.

LMC Fire Technology classes are offered at two locations in the county: Los Medanos College and the LMC Brentwood Center. Los Medanos College offers programs to aid those pursuing or working in fire service careers. The first program consists of six semester-long classes leading to a fire technology certificate or degree.
