This Diploma of Higher Education in History and Politics wide-ranging course will develop your knowledge of history while providing a critical understanding of political issues, concepts and institutions. You’ll tackle such exciting and challenging issues as power and equality, debates in politics at the national and global level, culture and beliefs, imperialism and resistance, and class and gender.

The Associate in Arts for Transfer Degree (AA-T) in History is designed to provide students with an understanding of a diverse array of societies and how the historical process informed the content of world culture. Through the course work associated with the History AA-T, students will address questions of identity, knowledge, consciousness, intelligibility, communication, and meaning as they compass the broad disciplinary terrain of history.

There are many careers where these skills are useful. Among these are marketing and advertising, community outreach, social services, political campaigns, civil service, administration and management, human resources, program planning, professional writer, and editor. Completion of the Associate Degree in History for Transfer (ADT) will prepare you to meet minimum lower-division admission requirements (60 transferable units) for transfer to a California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC). Transfer to the UC may require additional coursework; please meet with a counselor. If you are fascinated by history and how it impacts the present, we have classes to satisfy your curiosity. The History Department offers African-American History, Western Civilization, World Civilization, US History, and Pacific Northwest History courses. You can use these courses to satisfy high school graduation requirements (for Running Start), social science distribution requirements for transfer degrees, and teacher certification requirements.

The History Program is designed primarily but not limited to those students who wish to pursue a Baccalaureate Degree in History. The program of study will provide students with foundational history courses as well as those courses that meet their general education requirements. Upon successful completion of an Associate in Arts Degree in History, they will be able to transfer into parallel programs.

Associate in Arts in History for Transfer (AA-T) The Associate in Arts for Transfer in History (AA-T in History) provides students the opportunity to cultivate a broad perspective on history. The program is designed to stimulate appreciation for, and understanding of historical and cultural trends, and knowledge of key figures and events. The program is also designed to facilitate learning in such a way as to allow students to make connections to modern institutions and ideas, patterns of change, and progress, and encourage an interest in the 21st-century world.

The minor in the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine supplements the studies of students majoring in other fields with a coherent, thematic program in History. The minor introduces students to the history of science, technology, and medicine in a variety of time periods, geographic regions, and religious and cultural systems.

The following course set fulfills the requirement of the Specialization in History for the Associate of Arts (DTA) degree and prepares students for successful transfer at the junior level in History at our primary transfer universities, including the University of Washington-Tacoma, University of Washington-Seattle, Western Washington University, Central Washington University, Pacific Lutheran University, the University of Puget Sound and others. This specialization provides an introduction to the key political, social, cultural, and economic events in American society from the past to the present and a historical study of human societies in the world.

The African American Studies program prepares students with the comprehensive knowledge base, critical skills and social consciousness necessary to function as effective leaders in an increasingly globalized and diverse society. Our program is grounded in the decolonization and liberation projects of African Americans and their allies in the civil rights, gender, and sexual liberation movements of the 1960s that continue through the present in new forms that address new conditions. The aim of African American Studies is to support students in developing a critical consciousness and an understanding of social, political, cultural, and economic forces that have shaped the histories and current day realities of African Americans. Our studies are grounded in the principles of social justice and self-determination of oppressed communities. This program centralizes the knowledges, epistemologies and critical thinking produced by racially and sexually oppressed subjects, and we endeavor to examine the entangled intersectionality of racialized sexuality, gender, and class in complex socio- historical processes.
