Natural hazards like bushfires, floods, cyclones and pandemics can cause social and economic disaster in any city or region across the globe. UNE’s Graduate Certificate in Planning and Management of Natural Hazards explores how societies can best mitigate and build resilience to natural hazards. We explore the geography of natural hazards and the planning and policy approaches that address them. You will learn how to critically analyse natural hazards and disasters, and the challenge of reducing disaster through governance. The skills you acquire will help you be responsive and adaptive in the world and your workplace.

UNE’s Graduate Certificate in Planning and Management of Natural Hazards is a part-time course that comprises four core units that can be completed in just two trimesters, or you can take up to two years. It addresses the geography of natural hazards and disasters, associated planning and policy challenges, and the complicating factor of climate change. You will learn how to critically analyse natural hazards and disasters, and the challenges and importance of governance in risk reduction and disaster management.
The four core units examine the following key-topic areas:
- environmental factors that combine to produce natural hazards
- ecological, social and economic consequences of natural hazards and disasters
- methods relevant to studying aspects of natural hazards and disasters
- mitigation strategies and associated opportunities for policy development
- future trends in planning for and managing natural hazards.

UNE offers bursaries and scholarships that can help you with the costs of studying and living in Australia.
The UNE International Bursary reduces the published annual tuition fees for international students by up to 30%. These bursaries are available for international students commencing coursework studies at UNE in 2023.
We currently are offering a 20% Bursary for the 2024 intake.
UNE also offers a number of substantial research scholarships to postgraduate students studying for research-based degrees.

Curriculum
Course structure
To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 24 credit points at 400-level.
Core Units
24 credit points
Complete the following units:
- Climate Change and Future Planning (GEPL407)
- Natural Hazards (GEPL409)
- Uncertainty, Science and Policy-Making (GEPL415)
- Planning Policy for Hazards (GEPL490)
Program Outcome
- Demonstrate specialised knowledge of natural hazards and their planning contexts in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region;
- Demonstrate specialised and applied understanding of the role of planning systems and policy in the mitigation of natural hazards; and
- Demonstrate specialised and applied skills in research, literacy and communication, particularly pertaining to planning and management of natural hazards, including the ability to present a coherent and convincing argument based on current research.
