Learn English at Excel College! We are a friendly language school offering high-quality English courses in Manchester city centre.

We offer General English courses at every level from beginner to advanced. We are a specialist provider of IELTS preparation courses and also help students to prepare for FCE and CAE exams.

Our International Foundation Year course provides students with the skills they need to study at a UK university. Excel College is also a listed SELT course provider. Our experienced teachers create classes with a focus on communication. They use a wide range of material to improve your skills in all aspects of the English language. With additional One-to-One classes and Academic skills classes, we can tailor an English course to help you meet your objectives.

We also offer homestay and residence accommodation, a calendar of regular social events and the option to volunteer within the Manchester community. This means you will have lots of opportunities to make new friends and practise English outside of the classroom too.

Volunteering is a great way to practise your English, improve your CV and discover more about Manchester and the people who live here.

Excel College is in contact with a variety of volunteer organisations including community groups, youth centres, environment conservation organisations and a homeless charity. All of these organisations have a range of ever-changing volunteer opportunities on offer, some lasting for a few months to a year, some just for a day. You can take a look at current opportunities by visiting the Excel College blog.

If you are interested in volunteering, please let us know when you make your application. We will ask you to complete a form stating why you want to volunteer and what you hope to achieve. Whilst we cannot guarantee a volunteer role will be available for your course dates, we will do our best to find a suitable opportunity that matches your interests and fits around your studies.

All students from the EU can volunteer. Students who need a visa to study in the UK can volunteer as long as their visa allows it.

Other requirements

  • Upper intermediate level of English or higher
  • Studying a course of at least eight weeks

  • Practise your English with native speakers
  • Experience British culture
  • All bills and breakfast and evening meals included

Living in our homestay accommodation is a great way to improve your English and get a taste of British culture. Our hosts are carefully chosen and checked to ensure that you are happy, safe and comfortable throughout your stay. All our homestay hosts speak English as their native language but it is important to remember that Britain is a multi-cultural country and our hosts have a range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Our hosts live in different parts of Manchester. They usually live in residential areas, a bus ride away from the College, all between 20 and 50 minutes away from the College. Some of our hosts have young children, some are retired couples and some are single, working people. All of them enjoy hosting students and learning about different cultures.

Students have their own room and are treated as an additional member of the family. This means you may be expected to help with some household chores like washing dishes after a meal and keeping your room tidy. It also means that you get invaluable practice speaking English with native speakers and an experience of real life in the UK.

You can look at our newsletters for interviews with some of our host families.
