Since 1916, Sacramento City College has provided outstanding academic and vocational training and boasts 212 degree and certificate programs. With the main campus located in the heart of Sacramento, and college outreach centers in Davis and West Sacramento, the college enrolls a diverse community of nearly 22,000 students and offers multicultural activities throughout the academic year. For nearly 100 years, SCC has remained committed to fostering a learning community that celebrates diversity, nurtures personal growth, and inspires academic and economic leadership. Though SCC remains true to its history and tradition, the college has progressed in every area of teaching, learning, and technological innovations. The college proudly offers a vast array of opportunities for students of all backgrounds, including online courses and services, outreach center locations, and specialized student success support programs to choose from. SCC also has many newly renovated and modernized teaching and learning facilities, including the environmentally friendly Davis Center, the state of the art Performing Arts Center, and the iconic Hughes Stadium. On the main campus, the well-recognized architectural features such as archways, columns, and brick have been preserved through renovations to maintain the collegiate and prestigious look and feel. SCC is committed to offering programs and a college environment that supports accessibility for a variety of students. To that end, the outreach centers play an important role as alternative locations for access to courses, student services, and community resources for communities in Davis and West Sacramento. Both college outreach centers are accessible by bus, bicycle, car, or regional transit. Additionally, SCC students receive an excellent discounted rate for regional transit to encourage the use of environmentally responsible, cost-efficient, and practical transportation. And for those who cannot make it to any of the three SCC campuses, the college has boosted its distance education offerings in online and hybrid courses to meet a variety of academic needs. Diversity is a significant source of pride for SCC in many ways. The SCC student population is one of the most diverse in the region, and opportunities for engagement in various cultural awareness activities abound. Academically, the college offers a multitude of degree and certificate courses, as well as general education courses for those who plan to transfer to 4-year institutions. In this way, SCC academic programs provide support and opportunity for students to achieve success, no matter their goal. Outside of the classroom, students have access to support services to meet a variety of needs. SCC is proud to offer student services programs for tutoring, financial aid, work study, students with disabilities, veterans, and much more. True to its history, Sacramento City College continues to blaze trails in every aspect of higher education. While the college has retained its longstanding tradition of excellence, innovation, and accessibility, it bravely forges ahead in new frontiers such as environmental and social responsibility and social media and online communication. No matter the horizon, SCC embraces new challenges and opportunities at every turn with a focus on student success to contribute to the intellectual, cultural, and economic vitality of the community.

The Journalism A.A. degree is for students who have a goal of becoming media professionals, for which a degree is now expected. Some students pursuing this degree are non-CSU transfers who plan to major or minor in journalism at a four-year university and can complete lower-division major requirements through the associate degree. Other students are re-entry students with four-year degrees and want to add an associate degree in journalism to their resume so they can obtain multimedia skills, which are a necessity in today’s journalism. Other re-entry students desire a Journalism A.A. that will provide them with the skills to work in journalism.

A major in journalism offers students the opportunity to take courses in media theories, news writing and reporting, AP style, and writing for publication, which readies them for the following courses that offer hands-on experience in three award-winning, student-produced publications: the Express, a biweekly print newspaper; Mainline, a magazine published once a semester; and saccityexpress.com, the online news publication. The Journalism degree prepares students for university-level studies in Journalism and leads to entry-level employment and careers in print, broadcast, and online news media.... [-]
